Namesakes

Mary Catherine Sample • 1913–2010

Mary Catherine Sample was an avid world traveler who died in 2010 at age 97. She was the widow of Glenn W. Sample. After retiring as director of information for the Indiana Farm Bureau, Mr. Sample helped to found Ivy Tech college and is a former president of the institution. Mary Catherine’s role as his wife involved being at his side for Farm Bureau and Ivy Tech business functions and conventions, in which she excelled. Her lifetime was filled with travel, and she visited 126 countries, including all seven continents. She was in demand as a travelogue speaker, using her own slides to share her worldwide experiences. An avid reader, she also published eight volumes of genealogical materials gathered for 80+ years.

Lettie Trefz • 1898–1982

An educator for almost 50 years, Lettie Trefz was General Consultant in Elementary Education Textbook and Course Adoption in the Indianapolis Schools at her retirement, having served as Handwriting Consultant for most of her career. Mrs. Trefz was active in numerous clubs, including Woman’s Department Club. Even in retirement, however, she continued to consult for IPS. She passed away in 1982 at the age of 83.

Violet Ina Smith • 1901–1973

Violet Ina Smith was a longtime member of the Monday Guild, a Woman’s Department Club group devoted to sight-impaired women. Her daughter, Joy Adele Smith Cochran, also became a member, assisting the ladies of Monday Guild by organizing programs. Joy had a true passion for teaching and influenced by her mother, taught at the Indiana School for the Blind, along with Indianapolis Public Schools.

The Anne Starost Music Memorial Scholarship Fund...

...endowed by her family and friends, shall be held by Butler University to be administered annually by the Woman’s Department Club music merit competition committee and Butler University Music department. The interest shall be available for scholarship(s) and shall apply toward tuition in Butler’s Music department. Selection shall be made through performance auditions and winners shall present a program for the Woman’s Department Club as part of the award.
