Alison Schumacher from Second Helpings will explain what Second Helpings is and its current strategies and activities for alleviating hunger in Central Indiana. Everyone is asked to bring a box of elbow macaroni or spaghetti to donate! Thanks to Ruth Hartley, for suggesting this program.

A “let’s catch up with speakers” month. One–or even, two–of last year’s speakers will update us about their organization’s activities. We will follow their comments with Halloween games. Should we wear dominoes?

Frances Perkins was first woman to ever serve in a presidential cabinet. She was secretary of labor under Franklin Delano Roosevelt, from 1933 to 1945. She was instrumental in developing social security policy and a key figure in labor relations. Our very own Sharon Langlotz will tell us about Frances, which seems appropriate for an election month. Thank you, Sharon.

Eric Grayson, a nationally, and even internationally, recognized film historian and
preservationist shares insights about saving and restoring the movies, his adventures driving around the lower 48 seeking movies on nitrate film stock stored in garages and barns, how the Library of Congress is attempting to save Hollywood history, and the many characters he has met along the way.

Our Ivy Tech scholarship winner who was unable to attend Annual Day will join us. We will celebrate a past president's 100th birthday and our speaker will be Stephanie Denson from Spirit and Place. She will help us organize our living spaces and give us ideas about how to part with all that extra stuff we have!

Sally Cook will be our speaker. She is President of Historic Woodruff Place Foundation, Incorporated. Woodruff Place was the first planned residential suburb in Indianapolis. It was planned in 1872, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Ms. Cook will fill in this history, I’m sure, and will also tell us about the various entities involved in preserving this corner of our city.

Krystal Ford of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra will be our guest. The MYO is an outreach program of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Its purpose is to develop family relationships, and life skills for youth, through participation in musical ensembles. There are actually seven different orchestras within MYO. A unique idea and program, indeed!

Valentine’s Day! Today we will have two “programs.” Two of our earlier speakers will be here to update us on their projects - hopefully Rhonda Stidham from the State of Indiana, and Lynda Burrello from Friends of Garfield Park. Then, we will play games!

Our speaker today is Dr. Chelsea Haring-Cozzi, Executive Director of the Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention (CHIP). According to its webpage, CHIP is the “only organization in Indianapolis driving a system-wide community response to make homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring.” CHIP advocates for the homeless, collects data about homelessness, engages in fund-raising and speaks for policy changes. Dr. Haring-Cozzi will tell us how CHIP integrates these various approaches.

In September, we recognized our Past Presidents. Ruth Hartley was the only one in attendance and was presented with a rose and again thanked for her service.

Sarah Wood from the Indianapolis Zoo gave a general overview of the Zoo and its daily operations. She also enlightened us on some of the changes and new things to come.
October 2019
Glory June Greiff entertained us with readings of some very interesting prose and poems about Halloween at our October meeting.
​
Also in October, four WDC members attended the Indiana Blind Children’s Foundation Gala, Through the Looking Glass. We were very delighted to be informed of and shown a special plaque made in Past President Jean Jose’s honor. It commemorates her initiative and dedication to IBCF and will hang in a special place at the school.
November 2019
Author Ken Turchi amused us with stories and interesting facts from his book, A History of L. S. Ayers, in November. Many members reminisced about working there or the experiences they had during its time in Indianapolis.
December 2019
Our Christmas Tea was held in December. We enjoyed lots of goodies and treats, some of which were provided by our speaker, Sven Schumacher of Lutheran Family Services. He shared with us German Christmas Traditions and how they have influenced American holiday celebrations.

Club member and talented artist, Mary Ann Davis, explained and demonstrated her expertise in working with pastels at our February gathering.

In March, Carol Michel, gardener, author, and blogger, shared some of her tips and thoughts on gardening and how she enjoys writing and sharing her experiences.

Our scholarship winners who were unable to make the May Annual Day will visit us. Chris Phillips and Tina Cloer, from Firefly, the organization formed by the union of Families First and the Children’s Bureau, will also be our guests and let us know how things are going with the new organization. “Thanks!” to Linda Dunivan for suggesting this program.

Marianne Tobias, Indianapolis-born pianist and resident musicologist for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will be our guest. Ms. Tobias founded the Marianne Tobias Music Program at Eskenazi Hospital and is interested in the intersection of music and neurology. “Thanks!” to Mary Jo Showley and Susan DeVoss for making this program happen!
